The Future of Gaming – Powered By Web3?

Fenix Games and Immutable Team Up To Launch Mass Market Web3 Games

Few mediums have evolved quite as fast as video games. It’s a truth that has fuelled a potent, short cycle of nostalgia – the games of your youth pale in comparison to the hyper-connected escapist hubs players now find themselves. Today, video games make up a $100 billion global industry, a startling figure garnered, in part, thanks to the sheer diversity of the games we play; there’s a genre and a play style to suit everyone’s needs. The fate of tailored single-player experiences has fluctuated this century – from death knell to eventual salvation – due mainly to experiences wholly reliant on online connectivity. When we consider the future of gaming, it seems, Web3’s potential can’t be overlooked.

As per PR Newswire, Immutable announced this week that it is partnering with Fenix Games, a leading Web3 games publisher, formed of gaming and Wall Street Veterans. Immutable itself is a leading Web3 gaming platform, and this news signals a potential sea change for the industry: a further push towards interconnectivity that champions the future of gaming by identifying, supporting and subsequently launching Web3 games for, as Immutable’s press release states, mass market adoption.

Behold, the blockchain!

Immutable beckons the future of gaming. On its site, it boasts the unmatched speed, scale and flexibility using its simple, end-to-end Web3 solutions – a potent, real-world application of the format.

The Immutable platform is designed for games, and as we’ve seen recently, that can mean a lot of things, as behemoth brands vie to elbow their way into users’ experiences. Call this writer old-fashioned, but “wallet UX” and NFT minting does seem to threaten the future of those aforementioned single-player experiences… yet it also seeks to super-charge the Fortnite and Roblox model of interconnected content. “Always online” can seem like a threat, but it’s on the blockchain that Fenix and Immutable are banking, joining forces with top-tier game developers, to deliver something allegedly new, and empowered by Web3.

The future of gaming? Time will tell

Fenix Games brings decades of “deep operation experience” to the table, having brought gargantuan brands like Madden, Need For Speed and The Sims to mobile platforms. It’s a vital talent not unique to the gaming industry, understanding how to “build and scale licensed and original IP” to reach millions, and the hope is that Fenix can harness such expertise to bring compelling and quality products to audiences, rather than mere money-making, “freemium” machines. Immutable is a powerful platform, and by leveraging Immatable, the company is confident it will be able to navigate the inherent complexities of the Web3 sector.

“As we seek to expand the Immutable offering in service to the best web3 games, we are thrilled to welcome Fenix Games to the Immutable family.”
– Andrew Sorokovsky

Always connected, whether you like it… or not

That sentiment is shared by Fenix’s VP of Global Business Development at Immutable, Andrew Sorokovsky. He says, “Considering the founding team’s experience, both at AAA publishers and in Web3 at Mythical Games, we can’t wait to work together to build the future of gaming.” Gaming as an industry seems to stand at a crossroads; it’s, simply, an entertainment industry poised to grow, and that progress will be made by the titans at play. Web3’s potential is tremendous, and it will ultimately be up to paying players to decide if gaming is ready for such a significant shift.

The question is, will this quest for hyper-connectivity provide users with innovative, intuitive new worlds? If it’s more of the same, gamers are likely to vote with their wallets – as they always have done, and they always will do.
